Oregon's Most Prominent Peaks

Mount Jefferson from the Whitewater Trail

Mount Jefferson from the Whitewater Trail

The topographic prominence of a peak is the height of the peak's summit as the vertical distance between it and the lowest contour line encircling it but containing no higher summit within it. It is a measure of the independence of a peak, how significantly it stands apart from neighboring peaks.

It was not until about 2008 that I began to intentionally augment my pursuit of "high peaks" with "prominence peaks". Gradually, I became more interested in the prominence of a peak than just its elevation. Oregon prominence peaks are better dispersed across the state than are its highest peaks. Eventually, I completed visiting all Oregon peaks with at least 2000 feet of prominence. That activity has been an excellent way for me to explore my home state.

Since then I have expanded my Oregon prominence interest. The map below shows the locations of the 203 peaks in Oregon with at least 1400 feet of prominence. Here, I have most interest in visiting those lying in the Cascade Range and to the east.

I have obtained the peak data from peakbagger.com. If you hover over a peak map marker the name of the peak should appear. If you click a marker a new browser tab should open displaying the description page for that peak on peakbagger.com.
